Bracelets, rings, pins, brooches, earring and necklaces have all been popular pieces of jewelry throughout history. Each piece of jewelry has its origins in ancient times. However, the necklace has been around for thousands of years.

Necklaces

The earliest necklaces were beads around the neck. Usually these beads were graduated with the largest beads in the center of the necklace and the smaller beads on the outside. These beads were first made of stone and clay and then later glass and porcelain. During the Anglo-Saxon period terra cotta beads became quite popular but beads of amethyst and amber as well as glass were also used. Eventually the chain was developed as a means to hold the beads.

These chains with pendants were quite popular amongst Etruscan women. By the 14th century necklaces and pendants became vogue. However during the 17th century necklaces lost favor and were replaced by ribbons. The chain finally resurfaced in popularity during the 19th century. Silver necklaces were especially popular during this time due to their affordability. During the Victorian age filigree necklaces adorned with gemstones were worn by women of all socio-economic classes and especially by the wealthy and aristocrats.

Amethyst Necklaces

The amethyst filigree necklace was loved by Victorian aristocracy because of its soft pastel lavender color. Purple was a favored color of royalty and as a result the amethyst filigree necklace was worn in support of the Queen and her court.

Topaz Necklaces

While topaz comes in several different colors, the favored hue during Victorian times was blue. The blue topaz filigree necklace was especially popular due to its reputation for bringing luck to the wearer.

Onyx Necklace

Queen Victoria continued to wear black until her death to represent her mourning of her beloved husband Prince Albert. As a result black became quite a popular color to wear as clothing and in jewelry. The vintage styled onyx filigree necklace was one of the most popular silver necklaces to wear during this time.

Garnet necklaces

Another favored of the Victorian era was the deep dark red of the garnet gemstone. Garnet filigree necklaces were another popular piece of jewelry to wear due to its almost black red color. This was another suitable gem to wear during Queen Victoria’s mourning.

Peridot Necklaces

During Victorian times bright colors were not in favor while Queen Victoria was in mourning for her husband Prince Albert. While the pastel lavender of amethyst and the soft blue of topaz were acceptable to silver necklaces to wear, peridot was a bit too bright for the mourning Queen. However after the death of Queen Victoria, when bright colors returned to the aristocratic palette the peridot filigree necklace became quite a hit amongst the English aristocracy. This gemstone was also favored during the Art Deco period.

While all these different gemstones were popular during the Victorian and post-Victorian era, diamonds were also considered an acceptable gem to wear in jewelry. The man-made modern cubic zirconia is the perfect way to make these silver necklaces more affordable. The cubic zirconia filigree necklace has replaced the diamond filigree necklace and increased its popularity.
